Communicate, Cultivate, Celebrate 

Our scarecrow represents a proud member of our school’s Compost Crew, who collect compost bins from across our school each week, helping to turn our food waste into something valuable for our amazing school garden. 

Every part of our scarecrow has been recycled, reused or repurposed, not one item was purchased. His hat and school uniform were donated by previous students, while his other clothing came from second-hand donations to our school. His stuffing was collected from our skip bin, green waste bin and even weeds gathered from the side of the road. Our scarecrow demonstrates that sustainability is about seeing value in what others might throw away. 

Our scarecrow also represents the strong connection between our school garden and our curriculum. Throughout the year, our students have explored Australian landscapes, habitats, native animals and caring for our environment, with the garden providing a meaningful, hands-on context for learning. The garden has supported learning across Science and Mathematics, as well as our shared and dialogic reading experiences. 

Our scarecrow celebrates the upcoming AAC Awareness Month. As a non-speaking member of our school community, he uses an AAC/ALD board strapped across his body to communicate while working in the garden and throughout the school. 

Our message is simple: Communicate. Cultivate. Celebrate. Through communication, sustainability and inclusive learning, we can all help our garden and our community grow.
