The building and design of our school kitchen garden scarecrows has been a true community project, reflecting the history, values and character of Glenquarry Public School and our local farming community. Designed as our “Nature Guardians,” Rosie and Freddy represent durability, innovation, sustainability and creativity while celebrating the bright, passionate and bold spirit of our school. 

Established in 1869, Glenquarry Public School has a proud history. Our scarecrows are named after Frederick and Rosetta Weiss, the principal and his wife who once lived in the school residence. By honouring these important figures, Rosie and Freddy create a meaningful connection between our past and present. Both scarecrows were built using recycled and repurposed materials. Freddy was constructed from old star pickets salvaged from a fence removed from a local farm, while Rosie was created using scrap metal from a trampoline damaged during a storm. 

Their clothing, boots, hats and accessories were generously donated by members of our school community, giving new life to preloved items. The pot plant heads are supported by a frame made from old horseshoes and are filled with herbs that can be harvested and used in our kitchen garden program, symbolising growth, regeneration and a sustainable future. Standing proudly among our garden beds, Rosie and Freddy remind us that through creativity, community and environmental responsibility, we can all play a role in caring for Country and protecting our world.
