King Claw rises: Dreamworld’s mega thrill ride takes shape

Australia’s biggest theme park is edging closer to unleashing its next colossal thrill machine, with Dreamworld today announcing major construction milestones on the hotly anticipated King Claw.

Set to replace the iconic ride , The Claw, King Claw will be the largest Intamin gyro swing ride in the Southern Hemisphere, reaching heights and speeds never before experienced at the park. According to Senior Project Manager Shane Boys, the core structure is now standing tall and proud - marking a major milestone in this ground-breaking build.

“We’ve now completed installation of the ride’s main structure, which included lifting more than 122 tonnes of steel into place,” says Boys. “It’s an incredible sight already - and we’re only getting started!”

Construction of King Claw has been a remarkable engineering effort. Massive components were manufactured across several countries in Europe and shipped to Dreamworld in 16 separate loads. These included four enormous support legs, each weighing 16 tonnes, along with a pair of 16-tonne top nodes and a 15-tonne pendulum arm. Two 1.5-tonne maintenance platforms and an additional 8.5 tonnes of equipment were also craned into place. In total, over 122.5 tonnes of hardware have been installed to bring King Claw to life.

Once operational, the ride will stand 27 metres tall and swing riders up to 42 metres into the air - higher than the tallest point on Dreamworld’s flagship rollercoaster, Steel Taipan. The pendulum will soar through an arc of 120 degrees, reaching speeds of up to 98 kilometres per hour, with capacity for 40 riders at a time. It promises to be an adrenaline-pumping spectacle for thrill seekers.

Over the next six to eight weeks, Dreamworld’s team will undertake the mechanical and electrical installation phase of the project. This will be followed by testing, ride commissioning, and the addition of immersive theming and landscaping elements designed to deliver a next-level guest experience. The King Claw build has mobilised a workforce of over 100 professionals, spanning a wide range of disciplines - from engineers and crane operators to ride technicians and themed entertainment specialists - demonstrating the scale and intricacy involved in bringing the attraction to life.

Opening later this year, King Claw will redefine what it means to experience thrills at Dreamworld , launching a bold new chapter in the park’s thrill ride legacy. Guests are encouraged to keep an eye on Dreamworld’s social media channels and website for behind-the-scenes content and the official opening date announcement.
