Oakwood State School’s scarecrow celebrates two iconic parts of our local community. Bundaberg’s cane-growing heritage and the Mon Repos turtle conservation program. As Bundaberg Cane Growers mark 100 years of growing cane, our scarecrow highlights how sustainable farming practices help protect the environment we all share.  
 
Dressed as a cane farmer, the scarecrow symbolises the connection between healthy farms and healthy oceans. One hand holds a young cane plant, representing agriculture and growth, while the other gently supports a sea turtle, representing conservation and care for wildlife. Surrounding the scarecrow, rows of cane lead to a nesting beach where turtle hatchlings begin their journey to the sea, demonstrating the link between our land and coastline.  
 
Our display shows how reducing runoff, protecting waterways, using water wisely, and caring for natural habitats help keep the ocean clean and supports the survival of turtles that return to Mon Repos each year. Using recycles and natural materials reflects our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Through this project, we celebrate local farmers as environmental stewards and share an important message: when we protect our land, we protect our oceans, wildlife, and future generations.
