The PBSS Skellyfish (Palm Beach Primary School). 

We choose a jellyfish as our scarecrow because it is an important part of marine life ecosystem and we named her ‘Skellyfish’. The Palmy Planeteers, a small group of children from PBSS have been working in partnership with Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary to clean up our local beach. So far, we have collected 25kg of rubbish at the beach and feel that we have made a significant impact by helping to keep our beach cleaner and safer. The rubbish bags at the bottom of Skellyfish are only a small sample of litter collected on our beach. It represents pollution and danger it poses to our marine ecosystems. Examples we have seen include birds and other marine life caught in discarded fishing lines, hooks and nets. Other people we have met on our clean up days have been inspired by our work and started cleaning up the beach during their daily walks. Skelllyfish was built using driftwood collected from the beach and many recyclable materials which we already had. Removing 25kg of rubbish from the beach is a small but important act toward creating a more sustainable future and protecting our beach and marine life.
