Our scarecrow ‘TC’ was created to celebrate Country and acknowledge the special place in which our school community learns, grows and connects. The Caves State School is located on Darumbal Country, and we wanted our scarecrow to reflect our appreciation for the land, culture and stories that have been connected to this Country for generations. 

Recently, our students worked together to build a gunyah within our play ‘nature strip’. This experience encouraged students to think more deeply about connection to Country, the natural environment and the ways Aboriginal peoples have used knowledge of the land and natural materials to create shelter and meet their needs. 

When it came time to choose a theme for our scarecrow, the gunyah provided the perfect inspiration. We felt it was fitting to place our scarecrow alongside it, creating a display that celebrates our connection to the land around us. 

Creating our scarecrow was a whole-school effort, with students from Prep to Year 6 working together to bring our idea to life. Our scarecrow features prints of Australian symbols and native animals, including the frog, the totem of the Darumbal people. 
Our scarecrow incorporates natural materials and elements inspired by the Australian environment, representing our rural community and the Country we are fortunate to learn on each day.
