A dedicated group of Year 5 and 6 students worked collaboratively to create the Upper Coomera State College scarecrow entry. Through thoughtful discussions about conservation, wildlife protection and climate change, the students developed a shared vision: Kaitiaki. 

Kaitiaki is a Māori term for a guardian or protector who cares for people, places and natural resources, ensuring they are protected and passed safely to future generations. 

Her dress is adorned with vibrant flowers, representing the beauty of Country and the deep connection between people, plants and the natural world. Butterflies surround Kaitiaki, symbolising transformation, hope and the human spirit, reminding us that even small changes can create a lasting impact. 

The leaves, flowers and butterflies have been created from recycled milk bottles. Look closely at the leaves and you will discover environmental pledges written by our students. Each pledge represents a personal commitment to help Kaitiaki care for and conserve our precious environment. 

Kaitiaki holds a mirror and asks, “Who can make a difference?” The answer is simple — the person looking back at you. 

Through Kaitiaki, our students wanted to share an important message: we all have a responsibility to care for Country and protect the world we share with the creatures, plants and people who call it home.
