The Best Family 3-Day Gold Coast Itinerary

Last published: 11-12-2025

Need a holiday but short on time? My family recently visited Queensland’s Gold Coast and found it to be the perfect family destination for a short break that gives a massive recharge. With beaches, theme parks, wildlife, and bushwalks, it had everything our family needed (and wanted!) for a jam-packed couple of days. And its location, either a short drive from Brisbane on the M1 or a super quick direct flight from Sydney, Melbourne and other capital cities, means more time spent relaxing poolside and less time on the road. So, if you’re after a Gold Coast itinerary that balances rides, water slides, views and nature, follow our steps with this three-day guide to fun.

The itinerary at a glance

• Day 1: Dreamworld — A full day of rides for the whole family, plus time to meet Aussie wildlife
• Day 2: WhiteWater World, Surfers Paradise & SkyPoint — Splashy morning, beach strolls, and dinner with a view
• Day 3: Tamborine Mountain & Beach Time — Rainforest magic and coastal chill

Day 1 – A full-day adventure at Dreamworld

We kicked off where the fun is all in one place (Dreamworld!) and let the kids set the pace.

Morning – Full of Thrills

Dreamworld packs a huge mix into one spot, so we could keep the whole family happy with kid-friendly rides like The Dreamworld Flyer, Murrissippi Motors and EVERYTHING in Kenny and Belinda’s Dreamland, as well as find some big-kid thrills on the Steel Taipan and Jungle Rush. If you want maximum value, look at multi-day passes that cover Dreamworld, WhiteWater World (seasonal) and SkyPoint — ideal if you’re planning to follow this 3-day itinerary.

Lunch – Swing into Jane's Rivertown Restaurant

By midday, we needed to refuel. Dreamworld has lots of easy, tasty options dotted around the park, but we couldn't walk past Jane's Rivertown Restaurant. It’s an interactive dining adventure with easy pub-style food that our kids love. It’s a great option for a sit-down meal that helps you take a breather and a break, while keeping the kids entertained.

Afternoon – Meeting some Furry Favourites

Our favourite moment of the day? Meeting iconic Aussie native animals. From our visit, my tip is to save seeing the wildlife for the early afternoon, when the kids are a little calmer. We took it slow, got to ask the keepers some questions, and learnt heaps about conservation, while the little ones got close-up to kangaroos, koalas, and even a bilby!

Evening – Viral Eats Close to Home

We left as the sun dipped, then went for an easy, family-friendly dinner near the hotel. We stayed at BIG4 Gold Coast Holiday Park to keep nice and close to the action, so couldn’t go past  Burg World for dinner — only a few minutes' walk away and the most delicious smash patties and Dubai cups we’ve ever eaten. If you’re staying at Paradise Resort, their on-site dining makes for an equally easy and family-friendly option.

Day 2 – WhiteWater World, Surfers Paradise & SkyPoint

Nothing beats starting the day with slides, finishing with a skyline sunset, and squeezing in some beach time in between.

Morning – The 'Coolest' Morning

We headed next door to WhiteWater World for epic slides like the Fully 6, splash areas for the younger kids, and chilling out in the Cave of Waves pool. I recommend hiring lockers and a cabana to set up a base for the family for the day. If you’re visiting during the warmer months, this is the ultimate way to cool off and keep the kids entertained.

Lunch – The Esplanade

After a few hours of water fun, we made our way to Surfers Paradise Beach — because no Gold Coast trip is complete without some sand between your toes! The kids built sandcastles while we soaked up the sun, grabbed some ice cream, and strolled along the famous esplanade.

Evening – Dinner with a View

We wrapped up our day at SkyPoint Observation Deck. The 360° views of the coast and hinterland are incredible — but what many people don’t realise is that you can also have dinner there! SkyPoint Bistro + Bar is a relaxed, family-friendly spot to enjoy dinner with a sunset backdrop. The kids loved spotting the places we’d been earlier in the trip from up high.

Day 3 – Hinterland nature and go-karting

After two big park days, we went green and then full throttle.

Morning – Take in Tamborine

A short drive inland takes you to Tamborine Mountain for rainforest boardwalks, waterfalls and artisan village shops. We aimed for a gentle morning stroll along the Curtis Falls track, so everyone still had fuel in the tank for the afternoon.

Lunch – On the Mountain

Picnic in the rainforest, or head to one of Tamborine’s cafés for something warm and hearty. We stopped in at Spice of Life for a quick lunch and couldn’t go past their homemade cakes — perfect to pack away for a little afternoon tea in the car later in the day.

Afternoon – Engines Roaring at Kingston Park Raceway

Ready, set, go! We finished with go-karting at Kingston Park Raceway — friendly competition that kept Dad happy, and the kids roaring with laughter.

Evening – A Wind-down Dinner

We wrapped the day with a relaxed dinner near our accommodation, sushi and teriyaki bowls from Tama Ya at Homeworld Helensvale, and a quick pack-up for the trip home

Where to stay

For this Gold Coast itinerary, I like to stay central to the theme parks with easy access to Surfers and the M1:

Paradise Resort Gold Coast – A family favourite with its own water play areas, kids’ club, and easy access to Surfers Paradise.

InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort – Lagoon-style pool, leafy calm, and only about a 10-minute drive to Dreamworld.

BIG4 Gold Coast Holiday Park – Cabins and family villas a few minutes from the theme parks; perfect for space and kitchens.

RACV Royal Pines Resort – Resort-style stay with a lagoon pool and slides, tennis and spa — a good base between Surfers and the parks.

Getting to the Gold Coast

From Brisbane:

Driving is straightforward via the M1 Pacific Motorway. Under typical conditions, it’s roughly 50–60 minutes from Brisbane CBD to the northern Gold Coast/Dreamworld area. If you want to hit Dreamworld gates at opening time, arriving the night before is worth it.

From Sydney & Melbourne:

Direct flights to Gold Coast Airport (OOL) are frequent: around 1 hr 20 min from Sydney and 2 hr 10 min from Melbourne. From OOL, the 777 bus links the airport to Broadbeach South where you can hop on the G:link tram to Surfers and beyond; rideshares and shuttles run all day.

Itinerary & Gold Coast FAQs

  • What’s the best time of year to visit for this itinerary?
We like shoulder seasons (autumn and spring) for warm water, shorter queues and milder hinterland walks.
  • Should we rent a car to follow this itinerary?
It’s the easiest with kids, especially for Tamborine and Kingston Park. Public transport works well around Surfers and SkyPoint, but a car gives you flexibility.
  • Are these Gold Coast activities suitable for families with toddlers?
Yes. Dreamworld has plenty for little adventurers, with family areas and helpful accessibility support. WhiteWater World has kid zones and shaded spaces. Go Karting is only for ages 10 and up.
  • Can we buy tickets to Dreamworld online before the trip?
Absolutely! Booking online is the best value and saves time at the gate. Start with Dreamworld’s tickets hub.
  • Are there multi-day passes available for better value?
Yes. For this Gold Coast itinerary, look at 2-day or 3-day/three-park options covering Dreamworld, WhiteWater World (seasonal), and SkyPoint.
